Est-ce qu’on condamne la violence en la montrant ?
Dans un collège filmé en noir et blanc, un garçon est pris à partie par les autres. Pourquoi ? On ne le dit pas, et ça n’a pas d’importance. Avec Indochine, et les attaques homophobes récentes, on peut penser que c’est parce qu’il est gay, mais peu importe. Des boules de papier à la crucifixion finale, Xavier Dolan oscille entre le trash et l’esthétisme dans un crescendo de violence, et finit par faire du trash esthétisé. Mais dans quel but ? Si le clip veut dénoncer le harcèlement à l’école, il enfonce des portes ouvertes. Le bandeau sur les yeux des autres élèves et des profs pour symboliser l’indifférence est à mon avis le seul point intéressant du clip. L’ignorance de la communauté éducative sur ce qui se passe dans la classe et dans la cour fait partie du problème. Dolan montre dans sa scène du repas de famille que c’est pareil pour les parents. Le monde des adultes et le monde des adolescents se rencontrent difficilement. Bon, ce garçon est isolé donc. Imaginons que je sois un élève harcelé. Est-ce que ce clip va m’aider à me confier ou à changer les choses ? Clairement, je crois que non. La violence gratuite des images de la victime martyre qui souffre jusqu’à l’extrème provoque un malaise sur le spectateur lambda, et le mal-être de celui qui est harcelé ne peut en être que renforcé. Enfin peut-être que je me trompe, peut-être que ça déliera les langues. Si je suis harceleur, est-ce que ce clip va me faire prendre conscience de mes actes ? Là encore, sûrement pas. Le problème du clip n’est pas son manque de subtilité, mais sa fin. En réalisant cette tragédie trash, Dolan nous dit qu’il a voulu “envoyer une alerte à la jeunesse”. Or, pour qu’un message passe chez des ados, il faut des choses simples. 1/ Le méchant harcèle la victime. 2/ La victime est tuée. 3/ Le méchant est puni. Or, là, le leader n’est pas condamné. Il est tout puissant. Tous les autres le suivent. Il humilie, il a un flingue, il tue, il fume. Il est cool. À la fin, il se retourne même avec un sourire sur le corps crucifié de sa victime. Tout va bien pour lui. Si le clip se veut une dénonciation pédagogique du style ”regardez comme c’est mal, il faut que ça cesse”, c’est raté. Un film d’horreur n’a jamais empêché les gens de tuer, un film sur la guerre n’a jamais empêché les gens de se battre, etc. Peu importent les perspectives, peu importe où on se situe. Ce clip au final, ce n’est vraiment pas un choc. Ce n’est que quelques images de plus de la violence spectacle, d’où l’absurdité de censurer celles-ci, plutôt que d’autres.

Does one condemn violence by showing it ?
In a high school shot in black and white, a boy is harassed by the others. Why ? It’s not said, and it doesn’t matter. Knowing about Indochine and about the recent homophobic assaults, I guess it’s because the boy is gay, but this is not important. From the paper balls to the final crucifixion, Dolan wavers between trash and aesthetism to film an escalation of violence, and he ends up doing aestheticized trash. But what for ? If the video wants to denounce school bullying, it just states the obvious without bringing anything new. The only interesting part of the video is the use of the blindfold on the teachers’ and the other students’ eyes to symbolize their indifference. The education community’s ignorance about what is going on inside the classrooms and in the playground surely is a problem. Dolan shows in the family dinner scene that the parents are also ignorant of what is going on in their sons’s life. The world of adults and the world of teenagers meet with difficulty. Ok, so the bullied victim is isolated. Let’s imagine for a second that I am a victim. Is watching this video going to help me ? I think not. A basic viewer feels nothing but unease in front of the gratuitous violence of images showing a martyr-victim suffering until the end, so I can just imagine the misery a real victim would feel watching this. Or maybe I’m wrong and maybe this video will help people speak their minds. Let’s imagine for a second that I am a bully now. Will I realize how painful my actions are ? I don’t think so. The trouble with the video is not its lack of subtlety, but its end. By shooting this trash tragedy, Dolan wanted to “send a warning to the youth”. Ok. To convey an idea to teenagers, you need simple stuff. 1/A boy bullies another boy. 2/The victim dies. 3/The bully is punished. The end. The trouble here is that the bully is not punished. On the contrary. He is all powerful. People follow him. He humiliates, he has a gun, he kills, he smokes. He is cool. At the end, he even looks back at the crucified body of his victim with a smile. Nothing happens to him. If Dolan wanted to make an educational video, with a message like : ”look how bad this is, you shouldn’t do it”, he failed. A horror movie never prevented anyone from killing, a war movie never prevented people from fighting each other, etc., no matter your perspective, no matter where you stand. This video is definitely not shocking. It just releases some more images of spectacular violence, hence the absurdity to censor them, and not others.
